Civita Institute

Civita di Bagnoregio is a small Italian hill town in the province of Viterbo, region of Lazio, in central Italy. Civita is connected to the town of Bagnoregio by a narrow pedestrian bridge. The original bridge that connected these two villages eroded away over the centuries and was bombed out during WWII. You enter the town through an archway cut in the rock made by Etruscans 2,500 years ago and enter a town whose population has been as low as 15 in recent years. This unique set of conditions has created a respite from the cacophony of modern life, offering hospitable locals and solitude to learn from the history and beauty that surrounds you.

Currently the high winds and erosion common to this area are threatening the existence of this very town. In addition to the mission of discovery and cultural exchange afforded by NIAUSI's efforts, we are also actively pursuing strategies and monies sufficient to preserve this environment from further decay.
